MT4, MT5 and cTrader: which to pick
What each platform shows you about cost
MT4 was built for currencies. Its order ticket shows the spread in pips and the lot size, but it does not show a commission line. If your account charges a commission, you see it only on the statement after the trade. MT5 shows more instruments, including shares and futures, and its ticket can show a commission field if the broker fills it. cTrader shows the spread and the commission together before you send the order, and it asks for quantity in units rather than lots. These differences change what you can see, not what you pay.
The platform does not set the cost. The account type behind it does. A standard account usually has a wider spread and no separate commission. A raw or ECN account usually has a narrower spread and a commission per lot. Two people can trade the same EUR/USD price on the same platform and pay different amounts because their accounts differ. The platform is only the window you look through.
When you compare the three, look at the same field on each. On MT4, find the spread in pips and the lot size. On MT5, find the same two plus any commission field. On cTrader, find the spread, the commission and the unit quantity. If a field is missing, the cost is still there. It will appear on your statement. Ask the broker for the contract specification before you trade, because that document lists the spread, the commission and the minimum size for each account type.
How order handling differs between the three
MT4 uses a dealing desk model by default. Your order goes to the broker, who may take the other side. MT5 uses a different order system that can send orders to a market or to a central exchange. cTrader is built for straight-through processing, where your order goes to a liquidity provider without a dealing desk in between. These models affect how your order is filled, not the price you see on the chart.
The practical difference is in the order types. MT4 has instant and market execution, and the ticket shows the price you will get. MT5 adds more pending order types and a depth-of-market window on some instruments. cTrader shows the full order book for some accounts. More order types do not lower your cost. They give you more ways to enter and exit, which can help or hurt depending on how you use them.
For a beginner, the model matters less than the account type. A dealing desk can widen the spread at busy times. A straight-through model can show a variable spread that moves with the market. Both can be expensive if you trade during news. Check the contract specification for how the broker handles orders during volatile periods. That document tells you whether your order will be filled at the price you see or at the next available price.
Why the account type is harder to change
You can download a different platform in minutes. Changing the account type usually means opening a new account, moving your money and sometimes paying a fee. Some brokers let you switch between account types on the same login, but many do not. The account type sets the spread, the commission and the minimum deposit. Those numbers follow you until you open a new account.
Before you open any account, ask for the contract specification for the account type you are considering. Work out the cost of two pips on the size you plan to trade. Add any commission per lot. If the total is more than you expected, ask about a different account type. Do this before you deposit, because moving money later can take days and may cost a fee.
The platform you choose today can be replaced tomorrow. The account type behind it often cannot. That is why the lesson puts cost first. Pick the account type that matches your size and your frequency, then pick the platform that shows you the cost clearly. If you are unsure, start with the account type that has no commission and a wider spread, because the total cost is easier to see on the ticket.
One EUR/USD trade of 0.10 lots in three terminals
| Step | Amount | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Position size | 0.10 lots | One tenth of a standard lot, so the pip value is one tenth of ₦15,400 |
| Value of one pip | ₦1,540 | 10 units of the quote currency per pip on one standard lot, converted at 1.0850 and divided by ten |
| MT4 order ticket | Volume 0.10, Stop Loss, Take Profit | MT4 asks for volume in lots and two price fields; it does not show commission in the ticket |
| MT5 order ticket | Volume 0.10, Stop Loss, Take Profit, commission line | MT5 adds an order type menu and can show the commission before you send the order |
| cTrader order ticket | Quantity 10,000, Stop Loss, Take Profit | cTrader asks for quantity in units of the base currency, so 0.10 lots is written as 10,000 |
| Round-trip cost at ₦1,540 per pip | ₦3,080 for two pips | Two pips of spread on this position, before any commission |
The broker may round the pip value, charge a commission per lot, or quote a wider spread on the platform you choose. These figures vary between brokers and between account types, so check the contract specification before you trade.
Doing it once, step by step
You will compare the three platforms on the same EUR/USD trade, then check the account type behind each one. Do this once before you deposit any money.
- 01
Download the three demo terminals
Get MT4, MT5 and cTrader from the broker you are considering. Use a demo account, not a live one. Open each terminal and find the EUR/USD chart. You do not need to fund anything to see the order ticket.
- 02
Open an order ticket on each
On MT4, right-click the chart and choose New Order. On MT5, do the same. On cTrader, click the trade button. Look at the fields each one asks for. Write down which fields show cost and which do not.
- 03
Enter 0.10 lots on EUR/USD
On MT4 and MT5, type 0.10 in the volume field. On cTrader, type 10,000 in the quantity field. Do not send the order. Just look at the spread and any commission line. If a commission line is missing, note that.
- 04
Calculate the cost in naira
At 1.0850, one pip on 0.10 lots is about ₦1,540. If the spread is two pips, the spread cost is about ₦3,080. Add any commission per lot. Write the total on paper.
- 05
Ask for the contract specification
Contact the broker and ask for the contract specification for each account type. Look for the spread, the commission and the minimum size. Compare those numbers with what you saw on the ticket.
- 06
Choose the account type first
Pick the account type that matches your planned trade size and frequency. Then pick the platform that shows that account's costs clearly. Remember that the platform is reversible, but the account type often is not.
The mistake most people make here
People pick a platform because a friend uses it, then discover the account type behind it charges a commission they did not expect. The platform is easy to change; the account type usually is not. Before opening anything, ask for the contract specification and work out the cost of two pips on the size you plan to trade. If the commission is not shown in the order ticket, find it in the statement before you place a second trade.Check yourself
If one pip on one standard lot of EUR/USD is 10 units of the quote currency and the rate is 1.0850, what is one pip worth in naira on 0.10 lots?
10 units times 1.0850 is 10.85 units of the quote currency per pip on one standard lot. At 0.10 lots that is 1.085 units, which converts to about ₦1,540 at 1.0850.
You see a spread of two pips on a 0.10 lot EUR/USD trade. What does that cost in naira at ₦1,540 per pip?
Two pips times ₦1,540 is ₦3,080. That is the spread cost before any commission.
In cTrader the ticket asks for quantity in units. What number do you enter for 0.10 lots of EUR/USD?
10,000. One standard lot is 100,000 units, so 0.10 lots is 10,000 units.
Questions that come up next
Can I change platform later without changing my account?
Often you can. The platform is a piece of software you log into. The account type is a contract with the broker. Some brokers let one account work on more than one platform. Others tie an account type to a single platform. Ask before you open the account, because moving the account later may mean closing and reopening it.
Does cTrader cost more because it shows the commission?
No. The commission is charged whether or not you see it. cTrader shows it in the ticket. MT4 may hide it until the statement. The total cost is the spread plus the commission. A platform that shows both lets you compare accounts honestly. A platform that hides one makes the comparison harder.
Which platform is best for a beginner in Nigeria?
There is no best one for everyone. The account type matters more than the platform. Pick an account type you understand, then pick a platform that shows its costs clearly. MT4 is common and simple. MT5 adds more instruments. cTrader shows cost in the ticket. All three are reversible choices.
Do I need a different platform for shares or indices?
MT4 was built for currencies and does not list many shares or indices. MT5 and cTrader list more instruments, but the list depends on the broker. Check the contract specification for the instrument you want. If the platform does not list it, you cannot trade it there.
How do I find the commission if my platform does not show it?
Look at the statement after the trade. The commission appears as a separate line, usually per lot. You can also ask the broker for the contract specification before you trade. That document lists the commission for each account type. If you cannot find it, ask support in writing.
Can I use the same platform with two different brokers?
Yes, if both brokers offer that platform. You install it once and add each broker's server details. The accounts stay separate. Costs can differ between the two brokers even on the same platform. Compare the contract specifications before you fund either one.
